Mortar mixes are classified according to their compressive strength, bonding properties and flexibility. Each mortar mix has a specific portland cement, hydrated lime and sand proportions that keep each type of mortar apart from the other. Compressive strength, bonding and flexibility work together while holding masonry units in place. The mortar needs to bond strongly yet be able to flex in response to lateral loads as well as contract in response to changes in temperature. Choosing the right type of mortar mix depends not only on the mix’s properties, but what it is being used for as well. It is important to start your next project with the correct product for the job.

Type S: masonry foundations, manholes, retaining walls, sewers, and brick patios and brick pavements.

Type S Mortar is the ideal product for masonry at or below grade. Even though it is usually specified for those kind of jobs, it offers great quality. Type S has high compressive strength (1800 psi) but adds high tensile bond strength. Type S mortars are required to have a minimum of 1800 psi and their mixes usually give you strengths ranging between 2300 and 3000 psi. This type of mortar performs well while fighting soil pressure and wind, or while under seismic conditions. Type S contains 2 parts portland cement, 1 part hydrated lime and 9 parts sand.

Type N: exterior and above-grade walls, chimneys

Type N is described as a general purpose mortar mix and can be used in above grade, exterior and interior load-bearing installations. It is also associated most commonly with soft stone masonry. This type is ideal for anything that is exposed to severe weather and high heat. Type N is a medium compressive-strength (750 psi) mortar and can achieve 28 day strength between 1500 and 2400 psi. Type N is made of 1 part portland cement, 1 part lime and 6 parts sand.

Whichever mortar type you decide on, Bedrock Industries has the right product for any job. Call us today at 407-859-1300 to help get your next Orlando masonry project started!

March is finally here, meaning that spring is right around the corner! Central Florida is beginning to warm up, and families and friends will begin to spend more time outdoors rather than inside. One way you can make your Orlando backyard a little more inviting is through the construction of a fire pit.

An outdoor fire pit is essentially like a fireplace for your backyard that can warm your patio while adding ambiance and a touch of fun for the whole family. Outdoor fire pits make an attractive addition to any backyard, and are fairly easy to build.

If you would like to build a fire pit in your backyard, begin by marking your pit location and laying out your bricks. Bedrock Industries can help supply you with the perfect brick for your pit from elite manufacturers such as New England Field Stone, Landmark Stone, and Eldorado Stone. Secondly, create a level trench for the bricks. Then, fill your trench and lay and level the first course. After your trench is completed, you can begin to assemble your walls. Lastly fill the pit and cap the blocks.

As always, do your research before completing any sort of renovations to your backyard. Be sure to check your local laws and codes regarding open flames, and keep in mind that the pit must be located far from any overhanging trees, your home, and any other flammable structures.

Bedrock Industries is the #1 full-service Central Florida masonry supplier. If you are thinking about transforming your backyard this spring with a brand-new fire pit, trust Bedrock Industries for your masonry needs. Give us a call today at (407)859-1300 or fill out our online order request.

Bedrock Industries’ concrete bin blocks are durable and can handle large amounts of material. Concrete bin blocks are excellent for containing sand, rock, soil, and mulch. Bin blocks can also be used to build massive concrete retaining walls as well as privacy walls for industrial applications.

Concrete bin blocks are very durable and often used to create storage areas for aggregate materials. The bin blocks can be stacked high as a structure and can be engineered with Geo grid reinforcement. The concrete bin blocks will stay put because each block is created with grooves on the sides and bottom of the block so that it can lock with the adjacent blocks.

Bedrock Industries of Orlando provides bin blocks that can also be used for party tent anchors. Our 3,800 pound bin blocks and 1,900 pound half blocks have integral tie offs to stabilize large party tents. Tent Anchors in Orlando are available for purchase or for rent and can be picked up or delivered.

Undoubtedly, you have encountered brick sometime in your life. Bricks are a very common material used for building, block paving, and sometimes as an alternative to traditional pavement. But, many tend to disregard the fact that brick as a material as a rich, interesting history.

The oldest discovered bricks—which were originally made from shaped mud—dated to before 7,500 B.C. and were found in Syria. Other recent findings come from Israel and Turkey; these bricks are dated between 7,000 and 6,395 B.C. The first sun-dried bricks were made in Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq) in the ancient city of Ur in about 4,000 B.C. The ancient Egyptians and the Indus Valley Civilization utilized mud brick; this fact is evident from the ruins of Buhen, Mohenjo-daro, and Harappa. In pre-modern China, brick-making was considered to be a lowly job, but kiln masters were highly respected. Early descriptions of the production process and glazing techniques used for bricks were found in the Song Dynasty carpenter’s manual, Yingzao Fashi, published in 1103.

Moving on towards Western civilization, the Romans made use of fired bricks. The Roman legions, which operated mobile kilns, actually introduced bricks to many parts of the empire. Interestingly, Roman bricks were often stamped with the mark of the legion that supervised their production. In the 12th century, bricks from Italy were re-introduced to Northern Germany, where an independent tradition evolved. However, during the Renaissance and the Baroque periods, visible brick walls were considered to be unpopular and the brickwork was often covered with plaster. It was only during the mid-18th century that visible brick walls regained their popularity. Amusingly, in Victorian London, the famous bright red brick was chosen to make buildings more visible in the heavy fog that caused transport problems.

Brick has a complex, plentiful history. But in order to know where you’ve come from, you have to know where you’ve been, right? Our trained professional experts at Bedrock Industries are ready to bring your architectural dreams come to life. We represent some of the country finest brick masters, including Cloud Ceramics and Florida Brick and Clay.
ORLANDO, FL: The Bedrock Industries block production facility was a featured plant tour for The Precast Show 2012 held at the Orange County Convention Center March 1-3, 2012.

Bedrock Industries opened the state of the art production facility in 2010. The plant utilizes a Tiger Machine Company D Series machine. Product is cured in a temperature and humidity controlled kiln.

Retaining walls are built to hold back and stabilize slopes of soil that would otherwise move downwards. Retaining walls provide useful areas of soil at different elevations. For example, a concrete retaining wall could be used to stabilize slopes of earth against erosion or to reinforce a terrace.

The most important thing to remember when designing and constructing a concrete retaining wall is that gravity causes the retained material to be forced downward. Gravity creates pressure behind the wall, depending on the angle and strength of the retained material, which the retaining wall must be able to support.

At Bedrock Industries in Orlando, our architectural landscape blocks can make a wide variety of retaining walls including custom freestanding retaining walls. Our retaining walls can even be stained for a unique appearance and set in place with mini excavators or loaders. Bedrock’s retaining wall blocks are made of solid concrete and can be used to create a wall up to 6 feet high.

Brick is one of the world’s oldest and most durable building materials. Brick buildings that were constructed decades ago are still standing and look as distinguished today as they did on the day they were constructed. No other building material can match the classic style and elegance of brick. Brick has a long-lasting magnificence and increases property values by 5-10%.

This natural clay product is made by firing clay to approximately 2000 degrees Fahrenheit. A building made of brick requires very little maintenance. Brick never needs to be painted and never rots, fades, burns, warps, dents, or becomes frail. It is fireproof and weather resistant.

Because of the great qualities that brick offers, brick is a very popular building material used in many different construction projects. Bedrock Industries of Orlando represents some of the country’s finest brick manufacturers including:

There are many different types of brick because there are many different uses for this popular building material. Brick is used in the construction of buildings, patios, pools, sidewalks, and even driveways. Certain types of brick are used for the interior of buildings and other types of brick are placed around in-ground pools. Here are a few of the types of brick commonly used in construction jobs:

Vee-Brick: This type of brick is a thin veneer-face brick that is now being used in both traditional ceramic wall tile type installations and wall panel systems. Vee-Bricks are much thinner than traditional (full-bed depth) brick. Using this thin brick can be much cheaper than using traditional brick because of its reduced weight. Vee-Bricks can be used for interior walls, where traditional brick would be impractical.

Coping Products: Hard fired clay coping is used for the edging of swimming pools because these bricks keep their color forever and do not fade from exposure to the sun or bleed from contact with the pool’s chemicals.

Brick-Tile: These thin brick pavers have the classic brick shape without the roughness or thickness of ordinary brick pavers. Brick-Tiles are slip-resistant, easy to clean, and are commonly used for patio flooring.

The color of brick is determined by the raw materials it contains, the additives and coatings applied to the surface, and the method used to fire the brick. Additives blended into the clay mixture can create unique color completely through the brick.
